Store-Bought Pickles Ranked Worst To Best

Pickles on your burger or chicken sandwich? Absolutely. How about pickles in your potato salad? Can't live without 'em. But here's the thing: not all pickles are created equal, so let's talk about which jars you should - and shouldn't - reach for, listed from worst to best.
Kroger's Simple Truth Organic line offers an option for pickles made with organically grown ingredients. And while that sounds great, you can tell you're not in for a winner with these pickles just by looking at the jar. The color of these pickles is incredibly pale yellowish-green, which isn't super appetizing.
There's a freshness to the brine when you open the jar, perhaps from the organic cucumbers selected to make these pickles. But organic doesn't always mean better. Biting into this pickle doesn't offer much. There's barely any crunch, and the interior side of the spear is mushy in texture. It's a hard pass on these.

I guess they are my fav although Vlasic is still pretty good .............. but the absolute best are a bread and butter, short on the sugar, from my son's girlfriend

My favorites are the complete Vlasic line, but then again I haven't tasted all the brands mentioned here, but if I find something I like, I simply stick with it and look no further, even though there may be better options out there. • For me it's a toss up between Clausen (easy to get at the store, great flavor and crunch) and Jimmy John's (bought by the "pickle bucket"), which have better flavor, but are more expensive for less product, and require a dedicated trip to a separate store expressly for buying pickles. I go back and forth between the two. And the occasional jar of Famous Dave's Devil Spice Bread & Butter chips.

Vlassic doesn't have a hint of sweetness and "there isn't too much vinegar"?? Vlassic pickles are a vinegar and salt bomb and I love them. Idk where they got these criteria from lol

  • I put Claussen, Vlasic and Mt. Olive spears in the 1 gallon size Mt. Olive jar with extra pickling spices with about 5-6 fresh whole jalapenos(knife slits length wise to get to the vein) several garlic cloves. Store in fridge for 3-6 weeks while shaking vigorously every 2-3 days. If you like'm sweet I recommend putting in Trader Joes(or similar) hot and sweet jalapenos brine and all(2 jars in the HUGE batch) ENJOY. I get orders for these from 1/2 a dozen people several times a year.

I am 60 years old and think of all Vlasic pickles as pretty much bottom of the barrel while I think Clausen's are the best of all the pickles I have ever tried off the shelf. My German dad made the best pickles for me. Does anyone remember the pickles made in Enumclaw Washington back in the day? Farman's pickles. I used to rate those pretty high on the list as well.

  • i was born in 64 and from that point until the very early 80's pickles were great. but, somebody had the stupid idea of lowering the salt content and weakening the vinegar. i remember going to the grocery store and getting pickles from a huge barrel, they were really great back then, they were fresh and yet they had that snap and crunch along with the nice bite of the vinegar. too bad they don't make them that way any more.
